I’m researching this setup before my mom purchases a Mac Mini. Our only HDTV has multiple HDMI ports and we already have our Apple TV connected. The Mac Mini will also be connected to the HDTV and will be her personal computer (with her iPad for main display via Sidecar). We would like to continue using the Apple TV for movie nights and for AirPlaying content from family devices, rather than disconnect the Apple TV to rely solely on the Mac Mini.

My question is about switching between HDMI inputs on the TV. Will waking the Mac Mini automatically turn on the HDTV and switch it to the correct HDMI input?

I have read that if CEC is setup correctly, waking the Apple TV automatically turns on the TV and switches to the correct HDMI input. I’m trying to learn whether the same is true for Mac Mini. (Our CEC setup is correct; the TV-turning-on part already works for us, but I don’t have another HDMI-connected device to see if the input-switching part is automatic.) I’m asking because, ideally, I don’t want my mom to have to use the HDTV remote to switch inputs when she wants to work with her Mac. Thanks!

My recollection is that macOS doesn’t support CEC… haven’t tried it lately though.
Thanks! That is what I found in my research, except for another MR user on macOS 14.4 (here and here). So I wan’t sure if CEC was a recent feature for Macs. If not, does anyone have good results with a Kinivo (or other) automatic HDMI switcher, specifically between a Mac Mini and Apple TV? On the other hand, if I need to spend extra for something to make our setup work, would you recommend Luna Display in headless mode instead (wired or wireless)? Trying to figure out the setup with the least glitchiness!
