Does anyone know whether it is possible to use the iMac as an external monitor for the iPad using the VGA cable, together with a converter from VGA to Mini DisplayPort?

Thanks!

Are you sure you understand my question? Your suggestion to use Air Display indicates a negative. I want to use the iMac as the external monitor, not the iPad.

Sorry, confused the question.
And if you find some expensive converter of VGA to MDP (the MDP to VAG adapter WILL NOT WORK), then it might work in Target Display Mode.

that might be possible, on anything prior to a 2011 iMac. On the 2011 target mode only works if the source has a TB connection

Pity, since I have an 2011 iMac. Oh well, thanks for the information.

Yeah it cannned my upgrade path to the new iMac as I use my current Imac all the time as a big display for various apple products and PCs. Enough for me to hate TB atm :)

I just purchased a VGA cable for my iPad to hook it up to a beamer and thought it would be rad to use the iMac as a monitor for it as well. Unfortunately this does not seem to be happening.

There is software available that makes a Mac behave as an AirPlay device. Sort of like the Mac behaving like an Apple TV. This may come close to what you are looking for.

Here is a link that describes the first implementation that I saw, but I think others have done it too.

Unfortunately I don't care for streaming to my iMac, as all the files I care to play are already on my iMac.

I'd like to video mirror my iPad's screen to my iMac. It's just for fun, it's not a big deal, but as I stated earlier, it would be rad. =p

Yes, That would be nice. And the ability to mirror to Apple TV!
