I'm helping a friend migrate their iTunes library from an old PC to a new Mac. The easiest way to transfer the files is directly from the iPod since their entire library is on it. I will use a 3rd party iPod-to-Computer transfer program.

My only question is (because the answer has changed over the years) if I connect the iPod to their new Mac that has an empty iTunes library, will iTunes immediately wipe the iPod without user input and try to sync with the empty library?

Or can I choose to ignore the iPod until I've transferred all of the media?

When I switched, I just plugged my iPod into my Mac without any 3rd-party program. It asked me if I wanted to import my purchases. It doesn't work with "3rd-party" downloading, though.
