There are some other watches out there that pair up to the iPhone and websites claim they work prrtty decently.
Fossil/LV/Tag/Michael Kors, what ever brand you prefer.

My question is if you are not a fan of the square apple watch face do these "other" watches play well with the iPhone?

The android wearable only offer “limited” features, nothing like the AW. Fitbit and Garmin pair with the watch but you will only get text and email notifications for the communications aspects.

That's not true, I get app notifications also on my LG urbane and calls ( but can't answer from the watch)

I Can’t speak to any of those other android watches that you mentioned, but regardless, I think you’re going to find out that experience is rather glib with Android Watches pairing with the iPhone. Others have tried android watches with the iPhone and it’s severely limited. Unless you have an android phone, I see no sense in trying to pair an Android watch with the iPhone. The watchOS integration is so seamless with the iPhone, nothing else will compare.

But your features are still limited when compared to an Apple Watch. Sorry I forgot LG.

If you only want it for notifications then it gets the job done perfectly. I don’t like the square design of AW. But yeah it is severely lacking when compared to AW.
