Is it possible to just plug in either a USB or Cat5/6 cable to copy files back and forth ??

Networking? Yes....
USB? No....
You should be able to configure both computers to access each other over your network but your gonna run into problems because the XP machine can't read HFS+ drives and Mac OS X can't write to NTFS drives without third party software.
