Connecting Airport Extreme and Express with Ethernet

I just had an ethernet cable put in to run between my Airport Extreme Base Station and an Airport Express located on the other side of my house to get a good signal there.

I just want to know if I set the units up correctly, it's a bit cryptic for me.
It is working...for now.

Base Station:
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network.
Internet Connection -
Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Off (bridge mode)

Airport Express:
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network.
Internet Connection -
Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Off (bridge mode)

I read that the Base Station should be using the Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address selection. But when I tried that it just didn't work.

Assuming the setup I have is correct, I now want to extend the network wirelessly in another part of the house using an older model Airport Express.

Is this possible. When I plug in that unit it kills the functioning network. It was previously set up for a WDS network.

You should have the base station sharing a public connection, but it's possible that won't work with your ISP. What that setting means is that you are taking a public IP address and setting up a local network that feeds in/out through that single address. Not sure why that's not working, although it's possible your ISP doesn't allow that.

Your settings are right otherwise.

Do you have the ethernet cable plugged into a LAN port on the base station?

(BTW-I have this identical setup, so I'm looking at my settings. It's worked fine that way for 3+ years)

Is the older model setup just as an AP? You'll need to re-configure that unit so it no longer extends the network.

Like the previous poster, I have this working too.

If your AEBS is also functioning as your router, then you don't want it setup as bridged and you'll want the other devices plugged into the LAN ports. The other AEs should be in bridged mode and have their wireless configuration match the AEBS exactly, with the exception of channel. Automatic channel selection has worked fine for me.

If you are using a separate router like me (i.e. only using the AEBS and AEs for wireless connectivity), then set it as bridged and you can use any of the 4 ports on the back to connect your other devices.
