Connecting Apple Tv To stero system

Im currenty considering purchasing the apple tv. The only reason im interested in it is to stream my itunes library from my macbook to my stereo receiver in my living room. My receiver only has red and white analog inputs on the back.

Can i purchase a red/white analog -> optical audio cord and connect the opticla end to the apple tv and the anolog side to the reciever? will this output the music to my reciever?

No it won't. The optical out is digital, the stereo takes an analog signal (as you said).

So unfortunately, you'll need to convert the digital signal to analog using a digital to analog converter...

You will need a DAC to convert the signal to analogue.

if all you want is audio, go for an airport express. it has a standard 1/8" jack. with analog and digital on it, just like most of the apple computers.

it will join your existing wireless network just like the apple tv will

it would let you add a printer there if you wanted. and if your wireless is a bit weak in parts of your house, you could use the express to function either as a wired or wireless repeater.

^^This exactly. I didn't realize so few people knew that the AE had the AirTunes feature years before it was called AirPlay.

+1 for the air port express. Although another solution would be: ATv into your television then plug your television into your stereo system. Essentially you would be playing the music through the television which would then be playing sound through the stereo speakers.

Agree with others, I think AEs are so underated for what you get and have been around for ever with both optical and analog audio connections. I still use analog on one of my stereos so that I can have zone 2 playing itunes.

I have two AEs and the ATV2 and this gives me whole house music for less than $200, I bought the AEs used on ebay for $50 each.

Thanks guys for the input. The reason i am considering an apple tv over an airport express is because ive read many reviews that they are very unreliable and seem to break a lot.

But i guess if an atv wont work i have no choice.

I was in the same boat, so just bought a new sound system instead... it all works over HDMI

Moved the Aipport to my room

Typically only people with problems complain--the Airport Express is a great and simple little product that works fine--and I'm sure it works fine for 99 percent of the people who buy it. I love having mine in the living room connected to my stereo--via RCA cable. I was always able to stream from my iMac with Airfoil--and now I can do it from my iPhone with AirPlay. I don't have a need to stream video either--for audio, Airport Express is the way to go.

I bought mine from Amazon earlier this year--a quick look at the Amazon reviews show they are mostly positive--most are 5 star--and as I've said, my Airport Express works great.
