I would like to purchase the Apple TV2, however I'm not sure how to connect the audio to run through my receiver. I can connect to my TV with a Digital Optical Cable, but I'm not sure how to get the audio from my TV to my receiver which does not have an input for Optical Cable or a Coax input. I currently use A/V cables running from my Directv receiver and blu-ray player to my receiver to get the audio from those devices to come through my stereo. The receiver is only 5 yrs old-Denon.

There must be a way to do this without having to purchase a new receiver??? I would like my iTunes to run through the stereo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Audio is also transferred across HDMI.

You can then use whatever audio output that's available from the TV to the amp. If there's no digital or seperate analogue audio out, you can extract an analogue audio out from the SCART socket.

I'm guessing it's just a stereo receiver, in that case you'll need an optical to stereo converter and disable DD on the ATV2.
D to A converter

Denon make some inexpensive A/V receivers with HDMI, this would be the route I'd take.

Edit: the DRA-397 isn't going to get the job done for AV.

Look for an AVR series Denon.

Best bet would be to upgrade your receiver to one that accepts HDMI, but if that is not in the cards for you, monoprice.com has HDMI converters that takes the digital A/V signals and outputs as RCA Analogue signals. However, they are almost as much as your ATV2, and you could put that cost toward an entry-level receiver that accepts digital signals and get better sound and better utility out of your A/V equipment.

What you might be able to do is connect your HDTV to the ATV2 directly via HDMI, then if your tv has an RCA Audio Out (red and white), connect that to your receiver. It would send analogue audio out to your receiver. TOSLINK or Optical connections are usually a one-way signal, so connecting the ATV2 to your TV via Optical cable would not work.

What is DD? Sorry, just not very "techy" with some of this. So with the converter, I can plug the optical cable from the ATV2 directly into the converter and then run A/V cables to any open input on the receiver???

DD is Dolby Digital, I.e., your 5.1 signal. Obviously you are limited to a two channel signal with receiver. I agree you can hook up the ATV to you TV by optical or pure HDMI (video and sound) and perhaps connect the 2 channel out from the TV to stereo receiver by composite cables.

My TV has an optical output, so does it make sense to hook up the ATV to the TV via HDMI and then run an optical cable from the TV to my receiver for audio? That way, any other HDMI's that I am running to the TV will go through my receiver as well correct???

That's what I do. You will still need to convert the TV's optical out to a format your receiver will accept, if it does not have optical in. Also, your TV will need to be on if you want to listen to streamed music via the ATV.

PS if you are happy with analogue stereo only, you could connect your TV's headphone jack to your receiver.
