At the moment i have simply connected an ethernet cord from the dvr to my mac. When i check the ethernet settings on mac its showing as "Self-assigned IP" with an amber light next to it.

Is a direct connection from dvr to mac via ethernet the best method? or must connect the dvr to router.

The dvr is a home security system recently setup with a couple of cameras.

The goal is to reach the interface of the dvr using my mac via safari or firefox. To use as a backup or even connect to a cloud service in the future.

Any tips or help with this would be appreciated.

W/out more specifics about your particular home security dvr system, it's hard to give you advice on the "best" method.

Well first thing would be what network IP is the DVR. How is it getting an IP as if direct Mac to DVR then nothing giving out IP address there.

would expect that the DVR be connected to the Router, so that the router can get an IP via DHCP from the router.
the connect the max to the same network so can then connect to the DVR from the Mac.

may need to get the DVR IP address from the router system so know what has been assigned to it.

The DVR has now been connected to router and has an IP via the DHCP. The issue is when trying to load the dvr interface via safari i get the message "Your browser is not supported". Tried the same through firefox and it attempts to download a plugin called VideoPlayerTool. But found that its only compatible on a windows pc.

Tried downloading a recommended webcam software suite called Uniforge VMS. After installing the dmg macos pops up a message and says "Rosetta 2" is required before the software can run. I did some research on rosetta and discovered it was apple software to allow older intel legacy software to work on silicon so went ahead. Finally got to run the VMS and macos blocks the program because of "suspected malware".

Impressed with the security of not allowing any old software to run on the newer macs. But at this stage im beginning to wonder if its possible to get a solution for this. Perhaps there are other methods. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"Finally got to run the VMS and macos blocks the program because of "suspected malware"."

You could try disabling system integrity protection.
Open terminal and enter "csrutil status" to see what state SIP is in.

If SIP is enabled, do this:
- Reboot to recovery
- Open terminal
- Enter "csrutil disable"
- Reboot

You could try disabling gatekeeper.
Simple terminal command does it:
sudo spctl --master-disable

And then... try running the software in question again.

Sip is enabled. Luckily discovered the other day that the mobile app designed for this dvr by the vendor is also on the app store for macos. Tried downloading and it actually works on silicon, which is brilliant.
