I have a 24" M1 iMac connected to a nearby TV via a USB-C to HDMI adapter. Basically I want to occasionally use the TV to mirror the iMac, but most of the time I will be using the iMac screen only. The problem is, after I turn off the TV, there seems to be no way to make the iMac stop mirroring to the TV unless I restart the iMac or physically unplug the connector.

I realize that mirroring the screen uses miniscule resources, but I'd still rather be able to just stop sending anything to the TV when I'm not using it for that purpose. Is there any way to do this?
