Three iPhones: 5S(iOS 12), 7(iOS15) and an 8(iOS16). This is what I get when connecting any of them to my MBA(MacOS 11.7.8).

They all connect to Photos, and pictures can be downloaded to the MBA. They connect fine to my old MBP.

Any ideas anyone?

Probably "a software update is required to connect to iPhone or iPad" https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208831

If you haven’t seen that message, with your iPhone 8 (iOS16) connected, open the MobileDeviceUpdater app from /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/Resources/MobileDeviceUpdater.app

If that doesn’t work, you can manually install the required updates
