I am trying to connect my friends IPod to my computer with my IPhone cable but it isnt reading or charging through the computer. I charges when plugged into a separate outlet but not through computer

Can you use a IPhone cable to connect an IPod to mac ITunes?

I use the cable that came with my iphone 3g to sync both my ipod classic 160 GB and the iphone, without any issues. So either the cable is damaged or your problem is something else.

It's exactly the same cable so there shouldn't be an issue unless the iPod is so old it can only work with Firewire.

iTunes up to date? The new iPods need a later version of iTunes than that which came out when the iPhone 3G was released.

iPhone 3G -> minimum iTunes 7.7
iPods c. Sept. 2008 -> minimum iTunes 8.0

It is the only the second time the IPod has been connected to a computer since being purchased a year ago. I wonder if that has something to do with?

I added music to it the first time and tried to add new music today.

Might be stuffed, try resetting it.

Gotta go have XMas Day lunch now. Hope it's sorts itself out.
