Connecting Macbook Pro to TV problem?

I would first like to apologies if this is in the wrong place. I have a mac book pro (10.6.4) and I have all the cables I need to hook it up. (Mini display port to DVI and HDMI to DVI cable) with a 20-inch LG HDTV. But the problem is when I hook it up the screen on the tv only shows a background. How do I solve this? Go to display in the system preferences and make sure the mirror bit is checked.
