Connecting old speakers with a 3.5 mm male connnector to Apple TV

I am looking to purchase an Apple TV, but first I wanted to see if I could use a pretty decent set of old speakers that only have a 3.5 mm male male output cable. Currently, I can plug it directly into my ipod. I would like to stream music from my Macbook Air to these speakers via the Apple TV.

The Apple TV has no 3.5 mm female input jack, only optical. I am not at all familiar with optical audio cables, but is there an adapter I can use for this setup that will work?

I did see this thread that you referenced, but the suggested connector in the 2nd post does not seem right. Would the 3.5 mm male from the speakers connect to the COAX plug on this adapter or is that something different than 3.5 mm?

You have to click the "Large/More Views" button on the left, and then they have 5 different pictures. The second picture shows the "output" side of the adapter, where the power supply plugs in and there are L/R phono jacks.

Do your speakers have an amplifier? The Toslink converter probably outputs a line-level signal, so you'll probably need an amplifier if your speakers don't have one built-in.

Thank you for the reply. I did look at all the views in the previous post.
The setup is a Creative Inspire 2.1 2400. The small speakers connect by RCA cable to the two RCA inputs on the back of the subwoofer. Today I simply connect a 3.5 mm male to 3.5 mm male to my ipod from the audio intput on the back of the subwoofer. No amplifier needed. So back to my original question which is how do I convert the 3.5 mm male plug so I can connect to the Apple TV and use the speakers via the subwoofer.

as posted in the other thread this is what you need lead wise you need a rca to small jack to run from the convertor to your amp & an optical lead from your atv to the convertor

simple solution

1 solution is to plug the Apple TV into your TV via HDMI. Your TV probably has RCA (White and Red) output. Most TV's do anyways. Then you would use an RCA > 3.5mm cable which you can get at Radio Shack or MonoPrice. So you would plug the RCA into the RCA output on the TV then the 3.5mm to the subwoofer audio input jack.

Obviously this solution requires a TV and for the TV to be on. You'd also have to check your Audio settings on the TV and make sure they are set to External or w/e the option is.

IF you don't want to leave your TV on just for listening to music then u need a dedicated converter like this one.

You'll still need an optical cable and a RCA > 3.5mm.
