Hey guys I know the new Target Display Mode is raising many questions and much excitement and I am sorry to start another thread but from what I can see the current ones are focus on Xbox360 and PS3 (which is of great interest to me as well) but I have more PC focused question.

I am thinking about getting one of the new ATI graphics cards for my PC, maybe the 5870 which comes with a display port. The issue is that the iMac only has mini display port in, is there anyway/adaptor so I can use? Does this sound like it should work??

Cheers for any help

Thanks for the link but is there no adaptor that takes a full sized DP to mini DP? Is one of those converters really needed?

Really hoping this function on the new iMac is explained soon

would this not do the job?:

I'm sure there is. I don't think you need that converter.. Apple only said you need some sort of cable, not a converter. The people saying you need converters and the whole converter push are just rotten eggs jealous because they're not getting a new iMac!

I've just talked to Apple support, you will be able to connect a non-Apple PC to the iMac and use the iMac as a screen, according to the person I spoke to, you can also do that under Windows, no need for adapters if your PC's graphics card has a Mini Displayport connector :)

I've asked because I intend to do so too :D
But I can't guarantee that it will work, but it should do (crossing my fingers)

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter...

Wondering if anyone heard if you could use the existing Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for Target Display Mode?

One of the reasons I've been lagging on upgrading or replacing my old PowerMac G5 was the monitor issue.

1. Would like to keep the old G5 around as a server
2. Didn't want to have to keep an unused (most of the time) monitor around if I went to an iMac.
3. Wanted more than a Mac mini (which would use my current monitor and such).

If I could go from the DVI port on my G5 into the iMac as needed, that would be awesome.

I have my brand new 27" iMac here, also have a PC with an ATI 5770 with DisplayPort and a miniDP to DP Cable.

Cable is connected to the iMac, PC is running - I have no idea how to tell the iMac to show me the signal he is supposed to get from the DP-Input...

so did you get it to work?
and please show us some pics of that sexy 27" iMac

PLEASE tell us if you get this to work.

This has been my main question - I currently have a pc and a Power Mac G5, both plugged in to one monitor that allows me to switch back and forth between the two. I really really like this set up - pc's are cheap and disposable, so I don't mind having one sitting on the side. And believe it or not, there are still some things I prefer to do or have to do on the pc - so I'd love to get the new iMac, but I want to use the screen for both.

Have you read how to get a macbook to use the mini dp port? You should be able to get the pc to do the same.

Please let us know!

Try this...I found this on another post.

When connected via this cable if I hit CMD + F3 on the iMac keyboard, the iMac instantly becomes the secondary display for my MBP.

I found that on another post, the OP was using a MBP with his iMac.

yeah please give us an update with pics as well!!! VERY interested in your results!

it might not allow the DVI output but the displayport is VERY interesting!

You asked for it...

OK, I'll do my best to fullfill your wishes :)

First impression really was great, good looking, not as huge as expected:

But this morning in daylight the fun began...

First I noticed a slight underlying crack in the display-glass:

Second the alloy alluminum backplate is really poor manufactured, the gap for the miniDisplayPort isn't correctly cut so you can't get a miniDP cable connected. I first thought I might be to stupid to connect the cable, but it works flawless with my 24" iMac - but see for yourself:

Sorry for the very large pics ^^

I apologize in advance for my newbie question. Does the old 24 inch as well as the new 21.5 inch have the display port?

From there, I assume there is a difference between the display port on a 5850 and what is on the 27 inch which i see you are calling it a mini display port?

Like others I want to hook a pc into the iMac display.

No need to apologize!

The old 24" as well as the new 21.5" iMac have the miniDisplayPort. But only the new 27" iMac is able to, well at least supposed to, also accept video input through the mDP. So in theory it can be used to connect DP devices such as a PC with a DP output or (maybe) DVD/BluRay-Players or PS3/XBox with adapters to come..

Simple. Buy the DisplayPort -> Mini DisplayPort cable. No adapter or anything, just a cable with regular DP in one end and MiniDP in the other.

Simple only in theory :) Have the cable, the PC-card and the iMac but still no clue how to get the input to work...

Ah, yes... That's a bit of a nag...

Shouldn't there be something in the support sections on Apple.com/manual about that?

Well, if you ask me: Yes, there should be!! But it seems like noone is asking me

Surprisingly there also is nothing on the internet on this. I read in another forum that Apple Support told one guy there should be a whole bunch of information asking the new iMac Online Help for "Target Display Mode" - but there isn't.

So far I think the whole support for this will be integrated with 10.6.2 (as for the Magic Mouse).. would make some sense, wouldn't it?
