greetings,

i just received a hook-up for internet through an ethernet cable through my cable company in western canada, and the local tech's are unfamiliar with macs. everything works fine with my powerbook, but when i attempt to replicate the set-up on my imac, i encounter problems.

specifically, i'm going under "system preferences", then "network", then "built-in ethernet", then "tcp/ip". with my laptop, there is an option at this point for "using dhcp" and everything else shows up automatically. on my imac, the only options are "manually" or "using ppp"--in other words, the "using dhcp" i need is missing. the tech-help at the cable company suggested there is something wrong with my imac. is this the case? if so, how might i fix it? if not, how can i get my imac online?

thanks so much, cheers, dana

Try this...

Go into System Preferences > Network.

At the top, where it says "Location" choose New Location (edit: then click the "Assist Me" button at the bottom) and follow the prompts.

It *SHOULD* work.;)
