Hello,
In my 80’s now so please bear with me a bit.

Use comcast for internet.
Have a W10 pc.
Bought a new MAC desktop for wife.

How do I tell it to also connect to Comcast ?

Are there account passwords, or other settings I can find somewhere on the pc to enter on the Mac ?

Very detailed specifics would truly be appreciated. No idea what to do.

Thank you very much,
Bob

A few options for you. Option #1 is easiest, but no matter which you choose, just take your time and go step by step. If you have any issues at all, please let me/us know, and we will be happy to help you until you get it.

You can do this!

Option #1:
  1. I think the easiest option would be to call Comcast and ask them to help you find the Wifi network name and password.
  2. Once you have that, you will need to click on the wifi icon on the top right of your Mac (click that blue text for an image of it).
  3. When you click the wifi icon, it will open the menu that will show all of the wireless internet networks available in your area - click the one that the Comcast representative told you; the network name.
  4. Once you click that, it will ask you for the password in a separate box - enter it and hit enter or click 'Join'.
  5. That's it - it will save the information and will automatically connect every time.
Option #2:
  1. Locate your internet router (the device plugged into the wall that broadcasts the internet to your home)
  2. DO NOT unplug any cables from it.
  3. On the device, find a sticker, likely on the back, that will have a bunch of text.
  4. Locate the 'Network Name' and 'Password' (it will be something random like "Com134b", but it could be anything.
  5. Once you have that, you will need to click on the wifi icon on the top right of your Mac (click that blue text for an image of it).
  6. When you click the wifi icon, it will open the menu that will show all of the wireless internet networks available - click the one that the Comcast representative told you; the network name.
  7. Once you click that, it will ask you for the password in a separate box - enter it and hit enter or click 'Join'.
  8. That's it - it will save the information and will automatically connect every time.
Option #3:
  • The next few steps below can be found in video form by clicking here. When you're done, resume with the remaining steps that resume at "Go to your Mac".
    • On your Windows PC, click on the wifi icon near the bottom right of your screen (click this for an image of it)
    • Write down the name of the wifi network that says "connected" below it (just like in the image above). It will probaby be the one at the top
    • Now, click on the Start button (the button on the bottom left of your screen), or press the Windows button on your keyboard
    • Type "control panel" (without the quotation marks) and hit enter
    • Click on Network and Internet
    • Click on Network and Sharing Center
    • Next to Connections, select your Wi-Fi network name that you wrote down earlier
    • In Wi-Fi Status, select Wireless Properties
    • Now, select Security
    • Click on the Show characters check box
    • Your Wi-Fi network password is now displayed in the Network security key box - write that downmaking sure to note any capital letters and lower case letters (the difference matters)
  • Go to your Mac
  • On your Mac, click on the wifi icon on the top right of your Mac (click that blue text for an image of it).
  • When you click the wifi icon, it will open the menu that will show all of the wireless internet networks available - click the one that the Comcast representative told you; the network name.
  • Once you click that, it will ask you for the password in a separate box - enter it and hit enter or click 'Join'.
  • That's it - it will save the information and will automatically connect every time.
Good luck! Don't be shy about asking follow-up questions!

I'll make it simple.

If you bought a desktop Mac, it should come with an ethernet port on it.
(new iMacs have the ethernet connector on the power block, odd arrangement).

Just get an ethernet cable ("ethernet 5e" is what you want).

Plug one end into the Mac's ethernet port and the other into the port on the back of the Comcast "residential gateway" (combined modem and router).

At this point I would POWER OFF the Mac and POWER ON again.

That ought to get you connected.

Open Safari and see if you can connect to something.
ANYTHING, it doesn't matter.
All we want to see is that Safari connects to a website.

IF that works, you're "connected".

There are other things that will need attention later.
But you need a "basic connection" first.
