Connecting Two 27" iMacs?

Hi,

I currently have a 27" iMac, and I have a relative who's selling me his 27" iMac dirt cheap. I'm thinking of hooking the two up. I realise I can do this via Target Display mode, but can I utilise the second Macs power or is it just redundant? I don't use Qmaster and don't have any plans to.

Any ideas fellas?

Use one as a server/download machine? Mount it on the wall and use it as a TV? Put legs on it and call it the b3st t@ble 3v3r lolz?

I really do suggest qmaster, but I mean, if you don't plan to use it, then what would you need its power for?

I was hoping other apps would utilise it as a node, or make my first iMac run like super faster-er.

Great idea about the server though, It hadn't occurred to me. I've got one of those USB to DVI Gefen display adapters somewhere, mix that with Plex, a 40" LCD and some ripped DVD's, could be something rather than just a wasted Core2Duo.

I have two 27" imacs set up in this configuration, and I'm very pleased with the results. Command F2 simply switches between the two systems. Naturally, there are pros and cons of such a set-up:

PROS
Both machines run silently, and it's essentially like having extended monitors.
Having gone from a Mac Pro, two-monitor set-up, everything is pretty much the same.
You technically have TWO extended monitor setups, which you can easily and quickly switch between.
You can use either machine for whatever you like, and flick between the two, or use both at once, each on a single screen.
Set up took approximately five seconds (insert cable, press Command F2).

CONS
Both computers need to be put to Sleep or Switch Off independently.
Two ethernet cables are recommended.
Of course, two keyboards and two mice (although these are easily stored, and you can simply keep one system on, setting up automatic Sleep patterns to minimize the second keyboard/mouse use).

So, to answer the question posed -- yes, you can use the second Mac for anything you like!
