Connection issues 2021 iPad Pro with AirPods Pro gen 1

Have a problem with my AirPod pro connecting to my iPad Pro. They pair fine but the name for them comes up with the correct name - find my. This just started in the last week or so. They will work one time and then when I close the lid and then try to connect again, I get a display of the pods with the battery level I click that off but they will not connect- I then have to forget the riposte and reconnect. I tried them on my partner’s gen 2 iPad Pro and have no issues connecting and staying connected despite not being on the same Apple ID. Both iPads are up to date as are the AirPods. It is getting very frustrating as each time I want to use them I have to unpair and then pair again. We have tried all the suggestions you can find online, so am wondering if there is anyone with the same problem, and if anyone has any other things I can try? Just want them to work again, like they used to and like they do on the older iPad Pro
