Virtual PC 5.0.4 came out and I have read some reports of proformace dives after the update. Connectix even has some info on their website about how to downgrade to older builds of VPC. They say that if your running Win2000/NT/XP you may not want to upgrade to v5.0.3. Now people are saying the same thing about v5.0.4. Has anyone tried the update yet? Any one heard anything positive?

Wow, some downgrade instructions...delete the app and reinstall. You rule, Connectix! Sounds kinda Windowsesque to me.

Strange, though. 5.0.2 was a BIG speed bump in OS X, and, now that you mention it, I have noticed that 5.0.3 is quite a bit slower. How odd.

Actually, here is what they say in the readme file.

Addressed performance issue for 32-bit operating systems running in Virtual PC under Mac OS X that was introduced in version 5.0.3. For most users, Virtual PC 5.0.4 restores performance in Mac OS X to be equal to or better than version 5.0.2. Connectix is continuing to investigate and improve the performance of Virtual PC.

There is your answer. Go and get it.

i heard that connectix is waiting till jaguar, and when jaguar is released, they are going to introduce a vastly improved version of VPC that supports hardware 3D acceleration for things like Counter-Strike :)

Nope. Can't be done. Seriously, people have been saying this for years, and it won't work. They have tried and tried to no avail. I know I beta tested for them for two years. There will be a VPC 6 with Jaguar, but it won't have 3D support.

As far as 5.0.4, well, it is much faster than 5.0.3 and runs solid. New features are great, and it seems much, much quicker. Anyone else have the same results?

A few months ago, some software developers created a way to use Microsoft's latest DirectX drivers to co-habitate with the Mac, and use it's graphics cards - a big boost for companies who port games to the Mac. If Connectix utilised that method, then wouldn't that work?

Please correct me if I'm wrong - but it would be nice if I was right, would it not?

Look at Wines issues, doesn't VPC do more emulation (b/c its running on a G3/4 and emulating a P4, wheras Wine does it on same processor)
