I am looking to replace my aged 2010 27 iMac. I have an opportunity to buy base 27" 2014 5k model, but I am concerned because the original reviews pointed out that the those models exhibited scrolling lag due to being 5k display with low end graphics. Has anything changed overtime? Is anyone with base 5k 2014 27 iMac running the latest macOS, is the smooth experience?

Is this the one with the m290x? or the one with the m290?

I don't notice any lag on my 290x machine.

The 2014 5K iMacs have issues with image retention and overheating GPU’s. For reliability I’d better get a late 2015 model since those machines are a revised version from the 2014 ones.

macOS High Sierra brought the Window Server over to Apple's Metal 2 graphics stack and for those 2017 iMacs that originally came with macOS Sierra, it dramatically improved system animations across macOS, including in Mission Control. I don't have a 2014 iMac to confirm the same though, but perhaps someone running High Sierra on a 2014 iMac can confirm this for you.

2015 iMacs are just as prone to image retention as 2014 iMacs. The reality is that IPS panels are prone to it.

Not as much as the 2014.

I had a 2015 iMac. It developed image retention within six months of purchase and the replacement display did the same within four months. Please tell me how you know it's "not as much" as earlier models.

A friend of mine has the 2014 Model which developed crazy image retention, my 2015 Model only has some ghosting on the corners. You can google for yourself tons of issues with the 2014 model screens.

image retention,yes.
Wasn't the overheating gpu problem associated with the m295x, though?
Mostly but not only since either GPU would easily reach 100C+

I appreciate the feedback. It looks like it might be a good idea to stay away from 2014 5k iMac. I will continue checking other deals as there are plenty of other options.

[doublepost=1536022859][/doublepost]Hi!
I have a 2017 Dell Alienware Auro R7
This has the Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB, I7 processor, 16gb of possible 64GB of Ram. With extra pro warranty til 2019 but extendable and transferable. Paid $1,800

Also a Acer Predator 27” UHD IPS 165hz refresh rate monitor 1ms. Paid $600

Extra warranty paid $350

I am considering a possible trade for a 27” iMac.

Found a 2014 late iMac with the 4ghz i7, 8GB of the possible 32GB’s of Ram, 4gb graphics card. Are there any recalls or concerns with this model? Am I shorting myself?

Why? Your current Dell system smokes any iMac that is currently available for sell (save the Pro model for $5k).

Is the m295x as used on the 5k imac GCN 3rd generation, or GCN 1st generation? Sources differ.

I recently discovered, much to my annoyance, that the cycles renderer on Blender requires GCN 2nd generation. Luckily, I can still use AMD's ProRender. If the imac's m295x actually does support GCN 3rdGen, Apple was really quite negligent in not disclosing the difference.

Can you spend a little more?
Why not consider an Apple-refurbished 2017 iMac?

What you're describing is exactly what happened with my Late 2014 iMac. I've now had my 2015 model for two years, and though it does show some retention, it has taken longer to develop the issue than my 2014 did.

In general, for @mlody or anyone else looking to purchase a used 5K iMac for long-term use, I'd recommend avoiding the Late 2014 and Late 2015 models as both seem to be pretty much guaranteed to develop image retention, especially the 2014. There are fewer complaints regarding the 2017 models.
