Hi guys,
Im considering buying a macbook air, but i've some question that you maybe could help me out with:
1) The 1,8 ghz i can buy from apple.com how old is that model? any confirmed plans on when the next generation will be presented?
2) How is the battery time in this model? I found a test on the 1,6 ghz one
3) Is it noisy?
4) Can I without problem run a windows 7 pro on it as a second OS?

thanks so much in advance
/Kim

For #1, any day.
For #2, comparable to my previous macbook (though my MBA has SSD)
For #3, it's not noisy at all if you have the SSD.
For #4, I ran XP without a problem in BootCamp, don't know about 7.

Or they could EOL it. No guarantees.

Possible but extremely doubtful. Apple has used the MBA to introduce new technologies in the past... non-removable battery, large trackpad, unibody frame, and surely more that I am not currently considering listing.

It is most likely that Apple will use the shape and design of the form factor in future MBs and MBPs. Therefore, I doubt the MBA's form factor will be EOL anytime in the next five to eight years... but the MacBook "Air" BRANDING may not last that long.

Somehow I get the sense that Apple thinks computers will be used in business or to complete work. While the iPad will be what people use at their home for entertainment and light computing work. Maybe I am giving the MBA too much credit, but I somehow sense that without an alternative to Flash, most people are going to be extremely unhappy with the iPad. Paying for every bit of content is why Apple is going in this direction, and I hope that Apple comes up with its own advertising paid video streaming. Surely Apple had that in mind with attempted acquisition of Ad Mob and actual acquisition of Lala... I know it's music but it was a step in the streaming direction.

I guess Apple knows better what we will use in the next five to ten years because it's already developing and dreaming up those devices. I sure hope the MBA's form factor lives on... I do suppose an MBA ten years down the road would be at least 3x more powerful than a current Mac Pro... yes, I said it! Probably 128 cores and 512 threads and gets 24 hours of battery life between charges with 1 TB of RAM, a 3D OLED display, and maybe even type out what we're thinking which is certainly the next step from typing, joking obviously.

A new model could be out any day now.

you seriously will not see any refresh of the Air or any MBPro models for some time if for no other reason (and there are others) than the iPad is the big thing right now.
No way Apple will cloud the sky with competing lines until the iPad is firmly in the market place, selling tens of thousands a day and all the excitement, comments, reviews etc have started to die down.

my money's on June

We may see a Mac Pro refresh since that's now a niche market and Mac Pro's sell themselves.

The earliest you will see updated MBP/MBA will be at WWDC in June, and even then it is possible it may not be until late summer. Although my money is a WWDC revealing.

And that would be a disaster considering they will have been out for nearly 13 months. People are NOT happy buying literally ancient technology. In this world of technology, tech itself transforms every single year. The tech in these Mac notebooks are old... the MBP is anything BUT "Pro." The MBA is completely irrelevant in terms of component makeup in 2010. Two GB of RAM is ill equipped in 2010, and Apple needs to answer to competitor designs, updates in other Mac notebooks like trackpad and extended battery performance, graphics that move forward not back to pre-2008, and the MBA itself needs to be the flagship of Mac notebooks... NOT as cheap as a MB or even a MBP. GIVE BUYERS OPTIONS TO SPEND MORE MONEY AND BUY EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT!

Or it could be in October, who knows by now. They are certainly overdue but Apple seems to put its eggs into a different pad, ah basket, these days...

doubtful... new iPods around that time although i guess that didn't stop them last year with iMacs... guess they believed the credit crunch didn't hit anyone ;)

Normally, Apple releases an update to one major product per quarter. It seems that once per year it also has a larger or more extensive update to either the Mac notebooks or Mac desktops.

Look at last calendar year (2009) for example... Mac Desktops, Mac Notebooks, iPhone, iPods, Mac Desktops (a huge iMac update). Almost every year it is that way.

2010 is missing a first calendar quarter update (second fiscal quarter)! This has to be either a calculated thing because iMacs are selling strong, or that the Mac notebooks were delayed due to loss of Nvidia chipsets for Arrandale or that the iPad was supposed to be ready at least a few months earlier than start of April. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPad was originally supposed to be released by mid-February or the Mac notebooks were supposed to be updated in January. Apple doesn't wait this long before Mac notebook updates, so something is going on. It could really be that Intel or Intel's anti-competitive thrashing of Nvidia's GPU/chipset really through Apple for a look. I wouldn't doubt it if Apple was really pissed when Intel released its Core Series Arrandale CPUs with its piss poor GMA IGP included. In the end, Apple can turn off that on die IGP, but I don't know what happens to TDP savings.

I would guarantee that Apple will update its Mac notebooks before iPhones if I knew iMac sales weren't through the roof. I believe the iMac is really selling well. Heck, it's $1449 for a 3+ GHz C2D, 27" LED ACD, and ATI graphics via refurbished section at Apple.com. A lot of people are probably buying the iMac for its display capabilities alone. Heck, I was considering updating to an iMac for display purposes only for use with my MBA. It's a real bargain, but a new ACD at 27" and maybe 32" would be great. If the price is right, I will do that especially if it has a lot of docking station like extras. Right now the iMac can be used like a SERVER with FireWire, its own DVD drive, 1 TB hard drive and 3 GHz CPU, and up to 16 GB of RAM. The iMac is HOT HOT HOT! It has to be selling really well. And it's considerably less expensive than anyone could have figured.

Anyways, if iPad and iMac sales continue being hot, Apple could put the Mac notebooks off as long as the need to. The iPhone is coming out at WWDC. Then iPods come out a few months later. Or Apple could turn the whole plan upside down by throwing the iPad into the mixup... who really knows other than Apple? None of us for sure. I set my alarm early every Tuesday to see if the MBA got its update. A lot of us want an update for sure.

Waiting for the MBA update is getting old. I really want Apple to knock it out of the park with the MBA update just like it did with the iMac update last Fall!
