Considering Buying An iPhone...

Hi -- I am considering buying a 4 GB iPhone and I had a couple of questions.

1. Should I buy it now or should I wait for a 2nd generation iPhone??
2. What are some of the major bugs or problems with iPhone, if there are any
3. Is it worth the money?? I have the cash, I just don't know if I am willing to spend $500 for a phone.

Also, can you tell me a little bit about how you like your iPhone, personal experiences, likes/dislikes

ALSO, what is the actual free capacity of a 4 GB iPhone??

The apps do crash sometimes. By apps I mean the iPod app and the Safari app. I'm not aware of any other app that crashes.

I get about 2-3 crashes per day but when the apps crash, it just bounces you back to the main menu. Nothing lethal or anything, just annoying. All things that Apple can fix in an update anyway.

Other than that, I love my iPhone. Best phone I've ever used.

How are people supposed to tell you if it's worth $525 and 24 months of $75 cell phone bills? I mean, each of us has our own financial situation and preferences in a cell phone. It'll be worth that kind of money to some people because they like touch screens and having the trendiest new gadget.

if you arent sure, dont buy it. thats always the best course to take.

you dont NEED an iphone, so you can wait.

i will tell you. i love my iphone. i have never had a crash and every part about it is amazing. the only thing i have a problem with is that you cannot output video through line out to a tv like the ipod video

If you see yourself watching or wanting to keep a lot of videos AND you music I would rec you save the extra $100 and get the 8gig.

I have a nice size collection of both and have 2.31 free.

that being said, smart use of smart playlists can make it seem that you have more then 4 or 8 gigs on your iphone.

If you are one of those that "has to" carry all 60 gigs of their music everywhere then you will need to work with them to give you the illusion you still hav all your music.

Would be cool if apple tv could see it and play the videos on it wirelessly.

Ugh, I have to admit I'm a little annoyed with all the newbie antagonists the site has picked up since the iPhone launch.


For the OP. If you use the "search" function of the site (very common on most ALL message boards, which I assume you use frequently) you will find find answers to most of the questions you may have.

Just for diplomacy though:

I love my phone, 9/10 people I have heard from love theirs as well. It's bad-ass. It does have it's flaws and omissions since it's a first gen phone. Fortunately, although not guaranteed, MOST of these can be fixed with a software update from Apple. However, the things it does, it does so well that you tend to not really even care about many of the omissions. The interface is a godsend as far as fluidity and ease-of-use. It FINALLY syncs with my mac properly and no matter how many custom fields I add in address book, THEY WORK!!! WHOO HOO!

As for whether it's "worth" it, I agree with the poster I quoted. If you aren't sure, don't buy it. At least go use one in the store first. Quit looking for affirmation in life from message board users.

I hope you find that you can't resist and get one and love it.

1) If you need a phone now, buy one now. This is very subjective...do you need to pay a big contract termination fee? If so, you might be better off waiting.

2) Major bugs? There really aren't any major bugs, more just glitches. You can read about some one them on Wired

I've had programs like safari just shut down on me from time to time, but Firefox does that too so it's not like it's unique to iPhone browser.

It's a computer product, sometimes things crash, but the crashes (in my experience) are more like programs crashing rather than the iPhone itself crashing. I haven't had to do a reset or anything like that so far (although others have).

3. Is it worth it to spend $500 for a phone? Well it depends...You're paying for an iPod and a phone basically. $300 for a phone and $200 for an ipod and you're right at $500. If you really don't want an iPod all that much then you're probably better off buying a different phone.

All that being said, it is a great fine with some very minor bugs and that is missing some features. If you're like me, the pros vastly outweigh the cons and I am very happy with it.

You're out of your mind if you don't think that many people bought this phone JUST because it was the newest toy on the market with a huge media buzz. That's what Apple thrives on.

apple may thrive on it for initial purchase, but what keeps people coming back, is their great products. of all the people i know, not one person has gone from a mac to a pc, but vise versa

As others have mention the iPhone uses OSX, so fixes are in the wings one would think.

As rumors of an iPhone Nano have been made, I do think we might just see a family of iPhones. Sort of like we have the Shuffle, Nano, and the regular iPods.

I personally see the current iPhone as the Nano of the family. The rumored iPhone Nano being the Shuffle, and a larger more PIM orientated iPhone being the regular iPod.

None other than the things I got even on my Treo 650

That is a personal choice. I went with the iPhone after playing with it on Day 2. It was love a first touch. In the last couple plus weeks, my feeling is this is what I wanted from a cell phone.

I work a weird schedule on my job, it is nice to check and respond to emails with an interface I am familiar with my iMac Mail app. The web browser is the best IMO on a cell phone. Having my computer life in a format that I am familiar with - priceless. Add to that the ability to manage my iTunes library on a cell phone easily is well worth the price IMO.

Worst part of the iPhone is the antenna being in the middle of the phone. I like to cradle my phone and when I do, it cuts off the connection.

When I don't, it works great.

Others then that, I suggest buying it.
