Considering buying MBA and selling my BlackBook 2.4 Penryn 250GB

so, what do you think? I've had my BlackBook since February 28, 2008, but it seems that I need the MBA, since I'm constantly traveling and utilize WiFi 98% of the time. The only concern is the 80GB v. 250GB and I'm planning on a portable hard drive of 250GB, and the superdrive. Any feedback before I make the purchase tomorrow will definitely help. I'm trying to decide the same thing.

I have to decide between MBA and MB - black. One thing I will do when I go to the Apple Store is run normal routines on the ones in the Store. Such as, restart a MBA, and decide how long it takes to get up and running. I have a few web pages I visit on a regular basis, and they take a long time to load. I want to see how long they take to load with only 2GB of Ram. I also hope the MBA at the Store has a video already loaded on it, so i can see how long it takes to load and if there is any breakup in viewing.

I can live with the small hard drive. I read that anyone buying the MBA should reload the operating system before installing any Applications, and use a "custom" install to keep foreign languages and printer drivers I will never need. My backup drive will have to talk to the MBA, though, through USB, since there's no Firewire port on the MBA.

If you pull the switch, let us know what you think after you've run it through some apps.

I'm actually going to the Apple Store tomorrow to check things out like you are doing. I have several external HD that operate on both firewire and USB 2.0, but I'll need to make sure when I get one that's portable that it is USB 2.0. My BlackBook has 197GB free space and it's originally 232GB available right out of the box. Keep in touch, PM whenever you like!

i was in the same exact boat as you...loved the look of the MBblk. But i went with the Air for portability as the MB is still pretty damn heavy and long in the depth dimension.

I have a 250Gb USB drive and could not be happier with what these combination brings me. for work/school, the ~55gb of space the Air has after a fresh install of way more than enough for me.

I store my music, movies and TV shows on the removable.

there was no difference to me between the MBA and the MB in the store with web, email, ical and Office apps.

The MBA isnt good for long travels since you cant swap the battery, plus the penryn will get tons more battery than the average 4hr MBA battery life... it is a great machine, but what you have is already better

Well...

I'm taking the plunge tomorrow morning; I've sold my BlackBook 2.4 Penryn and went down to the Apple Store and purchased my MBA 1.6/80HDD and they'll transfer my data overnight and configure my new MBA. I truly appreciate the advice and opinions everyone has expressed the past few days, it totally makes my decision so much easier. I did ask for a demo on the heat and fan issues, by watching youtube.com for about 30 minutes and there appeared to be "0" delays and no unusual overheating with the NEW demos. I did have to get an assistant store manager to log in and demonstrate youtube and the 5 different videos I watched. So, overall I'm pretty confident with the purchase! Good to go!

Seeing as you have the Mac Pro for all your CPU intensive tasks, the Air should make a good companion.

Yeah I played 3 simultaneous youtube vids on the MBA in the store and didn't see any problems.
