Considering changing from Android to iPhone 5.

Hi everyone. Up to now I've been a big supporter of Android phones. I've never owned an iphone or any Apple product actually. Lately though I have been unsatisfied with my phone (DROID Bionic). With the announcement of the iphone 5 I have really been looking into it and considering making the change to an iphone.

I was wondering if anyone here made the switch from Android to iphone, and are you happy with your decision?
 
Try it out. Its a good phone per the last 5 iterations.

I recommend you go down to your carrier, and use the model there.

I've had probably 4-5 different android phones over the span of 5-6 years, but eventually got fed up with the android OS. I was one who said i would probably never get an iPhone, however i decided to make the switch last year and went with the 4S.

As of now, I will probably only buy iPhones from here on out. I don't care about specs and screen size etc that people compare the phone with the S3... the iphone just WORKS...the OS just WORKS...never had any issues at all that i did with android.

What kind of problems did you have with your Android phones and can you give examples of how the iphone fixes them or does it better? Thanks!

I did last February, used Android for over a year (Droid and Droid X)

It really depends on what you like in an OS... if you really get into the Android customization on your home screens, you'll probably miss that on iPhone.

Overall though, for day-to-day usage, iOS is just more fluid and user friendly IMHO. Android always had a certain "choppiness" to me that I really didn't like, and it's still there with the more powerful phones.

I've found the build quality for the Moto phones to be pretty good, others (including samsung) not so much. That being said, the build quality of iPhone is still waaay beyond any android phone.

Go to an apple store, play around with a 4S a bit, see what you think.
 
I've preordered my iPhone 5... coming from two different android phones (Droid X, Galaxy Nexus).

I'm sure there are things that I will miss, but my biggest reason for leaving the android side is OS fragmentation. I did not want to root my phone, so you are at the mercy of the carriers to update an OS. At least with the iPhone I know that it will be updated when Apple releases a new OS or updates, at least thru my 2 year commitment cycle. Then I will have had both OS's and can decide whether to stay or not. Based on my love of the iPad and my iPod Classic, I'm guessing two years from now, I'll be getting the next iPhone.

Looking forward to actually getting the 5 in my hands.
 
I'm a convert. Had a Samsung galaxy as my first smartphone. Aside from any fundamental changes in quality or usability, I'm sticking with iPhone for the forseeable future.

the one thing i HATED with android OS at the time (it very well could be fixed now with ice cream sandwich) but i always had issues with the OS just freezing up, apps constantly freezing then getting the force close error. always had to reboot the phone..... if too many apps were open, phone would lag, etc etc.

not once have i had issues like that with the iPhone

Basically I hate that if you choose a phone that flops, you're stuck with outdated software. My phone is on Android 2.3 and there's like zero chance of it being updated to 4.1.
 
I have used droid phones for the last year and couldn't wait to go back to IOS and the better apps . Now I might miss voice and data at the same time on LTE but I will be rewarded with a higher quality OS and some apps that I really miss
 
I don't have any Android phone but my dad has. Well, he's not a graybeard but old enough to have some difficulties with getting used to newer technologies.

Although he learnt how download some basic apps and use the handset overall, he's getting stuck very often as Android is not user friendly at all. It puts a casual user (a one who just want a nice touch smartphone) in front of confusing situations and gives a lot of hard choices to make. Android is fully loaded with stuff that can be easily hided from eyesight on the first glance. This is why Android is not so satisfying. The user is getting involved in things that could be maintained without his effort/knowledge, BUT if after some time user gets more advanced, he could explore the phone itself by browsing some settings. That's why iOS feels so comfortable, clean and easy to use.

This is how it looks from a point of view a casual, non-tech user.

I switched to an S3 from iPhone 4S couple months ago. I really like the big hi-res screen and the ability to customize the layout (like placing my most often-used camera controls in the camera app), so I was willing to overlook some of the OS glitches, such as the screen showing corrupted text when I edit emails and the ridiculous upside down text select handle. The most serious glitch was yesterday when all my sync'ed bookmarks and contacts disappeared. My phone is completely stock with zero mods.

After I demo the iPhone 5, whenever that may be, it's a good chance that I'm switching back.
 
I have both iPhone and android. If I had to give up one it would definitely be my android. I've tried numerous androids starting with thunderbolt, charge, rezound, GN, galaxy 3, htc one and none come close to the usability and reliability of the iPhone in my experiences.

True. Thunderbolt (first LTE android)and charge users are totally screwed.

What phone is it? It's unlikely there is a zero chance of being updated, unless you don't want too...

DROID Bionic. It's actually on a list of phones that are supposed to get upgraded to 4.0, but it's been on that list for almost a year now with still no indication of when it will get updated. And when it get 4.0, it might be another year until it gets 4.1. Basically I want a phone on the cutting edge (or at least closer, a few months behind instead of a year or more) not one that will always be 2 years behind.
 
im in the same boat. right now i have the droid razr maxx but there is something about the iPhone 5 that catches my eye and i have an upgrade that i could use to get it just deciding if i want it or not is the question. lol I've been a dedicated fan of android but the operation system is just terrible freezing and lagging is just terrible.

anybody else switch from an android and never going back???
 
Thanks everyone, you've all been very helpful. I'd say I'm 80% likely to make the switch and get an iPhone 5 whereas before I was like 50/50.
 
I have been a longtime ios user and ditched it for my S3 two months ago. While I love the S3 and thought I hated iOS. If I had to choose one, i would pick the iphone.

Still debating on making the switch back to the 5. I think if I get an iPad I will be happy.

The S3 is an awesome phone, Android just has too many little bugs.

That's why I got an unlocked Galaxy Nexus straight from Google. You're not at the mercy of the carriers in regards to their version of the OS. While I'm sure other phones are great, that's why I would only get the phone directly from the OS designer; iPhone (Apple) or Galaxy Nexus (Google).
