Hi everyone,
I’ve been using the MacBook Pro 16” with the M1 Pro 16GB since it launched. It’s been a fantastic device and handles everything I throw at it with ease. However, I’ve noticed that I keep it mostly on my desk because it’s a bit too heavy to carry around comfortably. So, I’m considering switching to a 14” model.
When I look at my actual usage, I’m starting to wonder if I even need all this power. According to iStat, my usage barely pushes the M1 Pro above 20-25% most of the time. The e-cores seem to do most of the work, while the p-cores are rarely taxed beyond 10-20%. RAM pressure stays under 75% except when I’m doing something intensive like gaming (switch emulation) or occasional video and sound editing (these activities would cover even 2-3 weeks a year). Even then, speed hasn’t been an issue.
With the M3 lineup (and the anticipated M4 in October), I’m tempted by the idea of downgrading to a MacBook Pro with a non-Pro/Max chip. I’m curious if anyone here has made a similar switch or considered it. Did you find the downgrade impacted your workflow, or was it a smooth transition? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?
I’d prefer to stick with the MacBook Pro line because of the great screen and ports, but I’m wondering if a non-Pro chip is enough for my needs. Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
