Considering Milanese

I’m hoping some people with the Milanese can give feedback. I am on the fence with purchasing a Milanese loop. I have a Space Black Apple Watch 4. I’ve been using the Space Black Link since serious 0 which has held up incredibly over the years and is my primary go to. I like to switch up sometimes.

My biggest concern is from reviews I keep reading about scratching. Some say it marks up the ceramic back. Some say it marks up the case, and a review on Apple’s website mentioned it scratched their screen.

Is this a common issue? I’ve read a lot of people saying the Space Black Link Bracelet marks up very easy, and my experience is the complete opposite, I’m curious if the experience is the same for owners of the Milanese.

It’s not necessarily a ‘common issue’, but it would depend how cautious you are allowing the space black Milanese loop to come in contact with the watch due to the diamond like carbon coating. The Biggest mistake others make is when they take the watch off, they set the watch down on top of the Milanese loop band, because the band collapses and that’s when the scratching actually occurs with the watch. Your best effort is if you decide to Purchase the space black Milanese loop, make sure you lay the watch on its side to help prevent the band coming to contact with the watch.

I have the black Milanese link myself, and I haven't noticed any scratching. I do take care of my watch and bands very well, but I still wear it every day (Milanese maybe 2 times a week).

Thanks Relentless, that thread definitely answered my concerns, I wish I found that before I posted. Thinking I’ll take a pass on the Milanese.

I have a Series 0 in Stainless Steel, which I purchased at launch (with Leather Classic Buckle). Used only the Leather band & Sport Bands for the 1st twelve months or so & had zero scratches on the Watch. Around 12 months after buying the Series 0, I purchased the Black Milanese strap. Shorlty after starting to use the Black Milanese Loop, I noticed small scratches on the Watch, which I am convinced were caused by the Black Milanese Loop. I stopped using the Milanese immediately after I had noticed the scratches.

Today, I have purchased a Series 4 in SSSB. I still have the Black Milanese Loop & it would look amazing with my new SSSB, but I am too scared to use the Black Milanese with my new watch. I’ve read the comments along the lines of ‘you just need to be careful how you place the Watch down’, but it is simply far too much of a risk for my liking.

Slight off-topic, is this as big of a deal with the gold SS model + Gold Milanese Loop?

The Milanese loop since its so wavy/free flowing will come into contact with your watch. It's almost impossible to avoid it. Particularly when you detach the magnet the end of it will flop around and eventually hit something. I owned the SS version with my Series 0 and now I have the gold one also.

Sapphire shouldn't scratch, but the casing potentially might. For those with the steel version, just polish it once in a while. For those with the gold or black, not sure how resistant to scratching they are when they come into contact with equally hard materials (the loop presumably goes through the same PVD or DLC process the watch does).

The second question to answer is how much will bottom scratches if they are small bother you. I wouldn't notice or care too much about scratches I see under the light if they are on the back of the watch. Heck, my stainless steel series 0 had scratches all over the casing which were visible mostly under the light. Didn't even notice them day to day.

I think if you are going to wear it a few times a month on special occasions or just to switch things up you should be fine though. It looks good!

If you’re like me and you like to sometimes take it off your wrist and slip it into your pocket while you work, then Milanese is a no-go. It will scratch up your watch as it jostles around.

I wish I'd gotten the Milanese & Sport Loop when I got my watch originally. I like all 3 varieties, they have their own strengths.
