hey guys,

I saw im considering getting a used 40 inch apple tv for my living room. Thoughts. I have a 2nd generation but i would like to put some of my music and movie purchases on the first generation..

what do you guys think ?

A) 40 inch = 40 gig? Just making sure. :)

B) What's the going price for a used 1st gen Apple TV?

C) Without considering price, the only benefit of getting a previous gen Apple TV is the ability to purchase (rather than just rent) videos directly from the TV. (There's also the ability to use component inputs too, but if you have a 2nd gen I'm assuming that's not an issue) If you're just wanting to put some videos and music on it, are you having issues streaming those from your computer?

man alive there are many more options than that!

you can take that bad boy with you on trips, hook up a power converter and a screen! whala movies and tv shows on the road saved to the hd

plex/and all the hacks, man i got a 160 gig for $65 from another mac rumor member last week, and it is worth every cent!

got another 40 gig on its way and will be happy with 1 2nd gen and 2 1st gen atv's !1

there is a lot you can do to the atv gen 1 that cant be done with gen 2 but that goes both ways! (even possibly root os x onto gen 1!) saw it, was cool

I still have and use my 40 gig gen :apple:TV. Love it.

I'm sure it'll soon be replaced by something a little more capable. When that time comes I'll probably convert it into an audiophile music server.

i would like to put my my purchased music videos and music on it. and some select movies. The ability to rent movies is a great option too... and the travel option is worth it alone..

When I got my new AppleTV, the old one went in the bedroom. Then it occurred to me how much I would like to have one in my spare room / office - to essentially be used like an Airport Express to stream music but with the added benefit of being able to see what's playing & skip songs etc. (hooked up to an old LCD via DVI).

I have to say, the ATV in my office gets even more use than the other two - best $50 I have spent in a while. If I didn't already have an AE in my bathroom (& if I didn't think my wife would kill me) I might have one in there too. I really need to get a bigger place so I have more rooms to put an ATV in. There's always the car....and don't think I haven't considered it.

How does the portability beat a laptop?

Price.

Haven't travelled with mine but if I did, I would likely be using my laptop....as a laptop while watching TV. Just like I do at home. In all seriousness, I can't see myself taking my AppleTV on many trips but everyone's situation is different.

I admittedly hadn't thought of the travel option. That's definitely not a bad idea.

I note from your signature you have a 32GB iPhone 4 - therefore the travel option works well with an Apple TV 2 and AirPlay, you don't necesarily need a first gen unit. Worth considering this if travel is an issue for you. Plus the ATV2 is much smaller for packing etc.

Id go for ATV 2 to be honest

I have that one. I love the netflix option of it. and the airplay option. I really dont like having to keep my laptop open to access my itunes library. I defiantely need to setup a share or something from my time capsule. This old apple tv is for the bedroom. Just to be able to watch music videos and purchases. Ill keep the apple tv2 in the living room for netflix and movie rentals.:cool:

Why don't you use your mini to serve up the iTunes library?

The OP has a MBP, so adding an ATV actually makes it more expensive than using what they already have.

I think that taking an ATV on a trip would be an unusual way to use it. I would use an iPhone to browse the web while watching movies from my laptop if I just had to do both and owned the same stuff as the OP.
