consolidating computers

So, it's pretty much agreed that a Core Duo beats a single G5, correct?
Because I have an imac G5 and an ibook G4 that work great, but it looks like I can sell them on ebay and break even with an entry-level Macbook that may very well outperform my desktop. I'm a college student. I don't need 2 computers. And I'd love to be able to screen span without a hack. And have a laptop that can better handle my location audio recording needs. I can't even mix in the school's labs anymore because my ibook won't run the sessions... (the school lab has better speakers than the ones I have at home, which I use just fine with the imac)

I have done exactly what you've described and do not regret the decision one bit. At first I was hesitant because I love sitting at a desk for most of my work, but the Macbook and a monitor are perfect together. Go for it.

One suggestion, if you have a Craigslist local to your city, try that before ebay. You'll probably get a better price and won't have to deal with the fees and the uncertainty of faceless transactions. Good luck.

I take it that you find the Macbook to be just as speedy as the imac you got rid of?

I absolutely do, plus I love the portability and the flexibility of the machine.

It's strange, actually, but I had exactly the same setup (including RAM amount and models) as displayed in your signature. The iMac is still sitting on my desk ready to be picked up by the buyer tomorrow and the iBook left earlier today. I went the Craigslist route for both of the sales and had no problems whatsoever and feel that I received a fair price.

What price range do you have in mind for each of your machines?

$700ish for the ibook and $800-$900 for the imac. I've seen them go in that range on ebay, and I've got lots of ram & Applecare & a sleeve for the ibook (and a new battery thanks to the recent recall). What did you get for yours?

The iBook I sold had a Tom Bihn sleeve and 1.5 GB of RAM. It went for $700.

The iMac I sold had Applecare, 2 GB of RAM and the Bluetooth keyboard (but no mouse). I let it go for $850. I may have been able to get more, but I wanted to be done with the sale.

From the looks of it, both of your machines are almost exactly the same as mine. Your estimates are reasonable and definitely possible. Again, good luck!
