Since upgrading my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) from Mavericks to Yosemite I've been having a bunch of apps hang up which require me to force quit them and try again until it just works.

Using apps that run OS X maintenance tasks like Onyx don't really help, I don't even think they are that useful either, I haven't seen it do any improvements whatsoever to stability or performance.

Currently running 10.10.3 (14D136).

Which apps are hanging and crashing?

A couple of things to try that might help:
  • Repair Permissions in Disk Utility and reboot.
  • Reset PRAM: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
  • Create a new user account, reboot and login to the new user account. Does the crashing and hanging issues still happen.
  • Boot into safe mode, holding shift-key while booting, login and see if the issues still happens.
See if any of this helps and report back.

photos always crashes and I can't import photos from iphone and ipad.
