"Constant Quality" ???

Anyone know what the "constant quality" slider does in Handbrake?

I've just been using the apple tv preset but then instead of keeping that checked, I just switch it to "average bitrate" and change that to 4000. See thumbnail...

Thoughts?

4000 ??? er why? way to high imo.

Constant Quality is a mode that is being used by other programs for a long time. It means that Handbrake uses as much bitrate as it needs to keep the movie at a specified quality. That can mean that one movie has a bitrate of 3500 and another needs 6000 to achieve the same.

A scene with lots of movement - increases the bitrate, a scene with very little movement - decreases the bitrate.

Family Guy would therefore have a much smaller final files size that an action movie.
