I've been having this problem ever since I bought this mid-2012 15" MBP that has ML on it.

Whenever I use VMWare Fusion, spotlight will start randomly indexing, for no reason at all, in 3-5 minute bouts, every 10 or so minutes. Time machine will also go crazy and start backing up huge amount of data.

I've also noticed similar behaviour when downloading torrents when they are writing big chunks of data at a time.

To try and alleviate the problem, I have asked through system preferences that spotlight does not index the folders containing my VM's, nor the VM's themselves, I have also asked it not to index my bootcamp partition nor my downloads folder.

The indexing became slightly less frequent, but is still there. Every time, my machine slows to a complete crawl, making the simple operation of opening a finder window take 20 to 30 seconds. My old 2008MBP with half the RAM and less than a quarter of the computing power performs better than this ML piece of crap, and I am at my wits' end.

Said indexing seems to also affect my virtual machine when I elect to use the boot camp partition as a virtual machine. It'll usually start indexing, time machine will go crazy, and windows will crash, usually 2 to 5 minutes into it.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues, or could anybody suggest a fix? I am about to throw this thing out the window.

Have you tried resetting the entire spotlight index (mdutil -E /)? These kind of problems are usually caused by the index getting corrupted to some point. However, what I've seen with 10.8.2 is that it seems to index quite often. I don't think it has anything to do with VMware Fusion at all.

You could try adding your boot camp partition to the privacy tab to stop it from indexing that drive.

It's a known issue.

You could try resetting the spotlight index after that. It might still try to index those locations.
