iPhone Consuming several MB/s as soon as on WLAN

Hi community

A friend of mine is spending his vacation abroad and uses a prepaid SIM card in a mobile WLAN device. He's connecting his iPhone 6 (with iOS 9.3.2) through WiFi to the mobile WLAN device.
As soon as he is connecting to the WLAN device, his iPhone immediately and permanently generates a constant download stream of several Mb/s All automatic download are disabled (App Store, WhatsApp & Co).
In the meantime he "downloaded" already several 100MB :S Soft-resetting the iPhone did not change anything in it's behavior.

Anybody else faced such an issue or has some experience he/she could share?

Any hints are welcome

App updates? It's next to impossible to keep data usage under 500 MB per day unless you go into airplane mode.

As far as he told me, there are no pending app updates and all update mechanism are turned off. So there should be no "magic" happening behind the scene... But thanks four your input

Check podcasts? Maybe that sync each time he get on WiFi?

Thanks for your hint. Afaik there are no podcasts stored/loaded on the device. But I'll double check to be sure

Any other cloud services or apps like plex app and sync is set on? Having own nas and app related to the nas? For example I have a nas and one of the app use autobackuping in a cellular/Wifi or wifi only network.

Sorry about that, I missed the part you stated for WLAN and not cellular.

May you can check the battery status section and see if there's an app that is running a lot of processing time or background processing time?

There are no other cloud/backup installed I guess. But I'll double check that . Thanks

No problem As far as my friend could see, there was no suspicious battery activity visible... But maybe he should check this again after a few days (as WLAN is not consuming that much battery, this could cumulate across time and only be visible after a few days). I'm pretty close to suggest hard resetting the device, but this is not really a satisfying option when you are abroad

Here here a short update:

• After 3 days of excessively downloading whatever content, the iPhone stopped this today without anything changed in the meantime
• During the 3 days the iPhone downloaded more than 1.3 GB (?!?) over the WLAN hotspot device
• Moreover a unknown volume has been downloaded over several public WLAN hotspots

It looks like the issue is solved.... At least for the moment
