Hey all,

My dad has a 4S that seems to have a problem post-upgrade to 5.0.1.

After updating, the format of all his contact numbers changed to have no punctuation. They all look like XXXXXXXXXX instead of (XXX) XXX-XXXX.

Because of this, his iPhone doesn't recognize any text messages or phone calls coming in. They need to be changed to the punctuation format and then the caller ID will work properly.

Is there a way to change all these numbers globally, rather than going in and changing them all individually?

Thanks.

I have never entered any punctuation when entering a contact's numbers and everything has always worked fine. I have been doing it like this for over 4 years now. I'm not sure why its not working for you.

Sometimes format problems like this are caused by an inadvertent switch of regions.

In other words, you might want to check your region to make sure it isn't set to Equatorial Guinea or something.

Same problem here. I'm using iCloud to sync my contacts to the phone and my iMac.

I tried turning off the contacts on the phone in the iCloud Settings so that the contacts were deleted on the phone. Then I turned it back on so that it pulled the contacts list back down. That didn't help.... Had to do a full restore which wipes out everything.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I talked to dad this morning and he said they have all fixed themselves overnight... Woke up this morning and all of his text messages are now showing names instead of just numbers, and when he gets calls the caller ID is working just fine.

Very strange.

Very strange.

Suggestion: Get him to do a backup NOW while everything is still formatted properly. Should help if this ever happens again. Seems to have just been a one hit wonder problem. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!

This exact thing happened to me. I upgraded this morning and all of my contacts show as just the phone numbers when they text or call, yet they are all in my contact list still.

I tried a restore and still no luck.

Is my best bet to just wait it out and see if it fixes itself by tomorrow?

Are you guys on Verizon? Try this:

1. Dial *228 on your iPhone (A Verizon programming number)
2. Press “1” to “Program or Activate”
3. Once the call disconnects, open task manager by clicking on your Home Button twice
4. Close your Phone, Message and Contacts Apps
5. After 5 minutes, open your Message App to verify fix

If this doesn’t work for you, some customers have reported on the Apple Support Forums that pressing option “2” after dialing *288 on your phone has better results. Still having no luck? Unfortunately you may have to restore from a backup.
