So it appears if you use Gmail Exchange then the only relationships you can use for an individual are Spouse, assistant or manager.

I'm hesitant to have my contacts sync to iCloud (and perhaps open up the ability to use other relationships) for fear I'll have duplication/errors with Gmail since I prefer to let Gmail be my "home" for email, contacts and calendar.

Is anyone syncing a Gmail Exchange account (contacts) to iCloud and if so, any issues? And if you want to add a relationship to a contact do you have more than just the 3 options I listed above?

I have the same issue. Is this the field that Siri will use for relationships?

I'm not sure, which is how I ended up here...because if it is I will be annoyed I can't set up the other relationships.

Having the same issue, but I sync to an Exchange 2003 server @ work, not with a gmail-specific exchange setup.

I found a fix: (this fix assumes you have setup your iCloud account to sync contacts...even if you don't have any stored in iCloud yet)

1) Go to Contacts, then click Groups in the top left
2) Go to your iCloud addressbook
3) Create a new contact for yourself
4) Save the contact, but then edit it: delete any "linked" contacts (these are listed towards the bottom)
5) Go into Preferences -> iCloud and set "My Info"
6) Again click Groups in the top left, choose iCloud addressbook, and select the new contact you made for yourself in step #3

Now when you tell Siri "Joe is my brother" she'll remember!
