Contact Syncing Question

So I just got my first iphone and love it. But I do have one question. Why when I sync my contacts with both my exchange account and my gmail contacts that it doesn't check for duplicates and just merge them together vs having two of the same contact? Did I set something up wrong?? Also when I sync my gmail contacts using Itunes since I use my exhange account for work, is there a way to only sync the contacts in the my contacts section of Gmail?
