I've always used Contacts, but it is unstable. This problem is ONLY on my Macbook; iOS is fine. I use an M1 MBP, but I've had the problem before in my 2014 MBP.

When I'm entering a contact, the card will suddenly disappear before I can hit "Done." All the data seems to disappear. I may get one or two contacts added before this starts happening (or none at all). Later on, I'll find a bunch of No Name in the app with little or no data in them—I'm thinking these were the failed attempts to enter data before the app malfunctions. The only solution is to enter a contact, close the app, and enter the next. That is an inconvenience, because I have to navigate to the group, and add in there. Even then, there are no guarantees it will work. Also, I've noticed that when this glitch begins, if I enter the contact info in the main directory instead of a specific group, I can't move it into a group without having to close the app and restart it to move it. It gets frustrating quickly. Finally—I gave up on this so long ago, but I'll mention it—printing envelopes from the Contacts app is a nightmare. I'd choose the DL envelope and the contacts, but when printing began, each envelope would print in a lower position than the previous until address information runs off the bottom rendering the function pointless.

In the interests of full disclosure, I have 1,434 cards (probably less given several failed attempts resulting in No Name cards).

All I can think of is that I have too many cards for the program to function properly.

Has anyone else had these problems? What solution did you find?
Is there a more robust alternative to Contacts that provides reliability, full integration with Calendar (birthdays automatically populate), Spark email, and will integrate with iOS and iPad OS?

The number of contacts could definitely be the issue. Have you tried making a backup, then deleting, say 200 contacts, and then see if your issues are resolved?

Be sure to give Apple feedback if that is the case.

I'll try this. How do I go about giving feedback to Apple? They seem to have done away with that link in the menu.

I have a similar number of contacts, and it's never been an issue. Cards are minimal memory-wise, so I'm sceptical that it's a function of the number of cards. How about firewalls interfering with iCloud sync as you enter new contacts or interaction with a virus scanner/add blocker/VPN? Or some form of database corruption? If it occurs at the point of creation, that would suggest where the glitch was created.

I use Cardhop alongside contacts because it is better at categorising contacts; however, the reason it's helpful is that it's just a different front end to the same infrastructure as os contacts, so I imagine you'll have the same issue.

Ditto. When I had problems with the Contacts app a few years ago, I picked up a tip from several who had had similar problems to mine. Nothing like the OP's, but problems with contact images disappearing mainly. The tip was simply to disable icloud syncing for Contacts - and it worked for me. I had a Google account, and switched to using that to sync my contacts.

Would have been nice to have an alternative to Contacts, though. Tell us if you find any.

One possible way to test if it's a database problem is to export all contacts, then import to Contacts while logged into a different local Mac account.

To ensure the account data is pristine, you should create a throwaway local Mac account, and give it only a local login password. That is, don't connect it to any Apple ID or other cloud-based account.

I'd try different export formats, too. Each one would be on a new account.
