Contacts are gone (1st gen iphone)

Hello gurus:

My buddy has a first generation iphone. This morning he went to make a call and ALL his contacts were gone (a couple hundred or so). They are not in his Address Book on the mac, nor do they show up in his "Mobile Me". Any ideas on how to recover the info on his sim card?

Does he have time machine?

unfortunately, I don't think so. His Macbook pro is pretty stock from the day he bought it... it was the first version of the Intel Duo-Core Macbook Pros... I don't think it came with time machine.

However, if he does, how would he recover from there?

If it does, he can go back to when he had contacts and restore them.
