iOS contacts from within application

Our application requires a field in which users can select a contact from their existing contacts.......How is this done? Is there an easy way for an application to read your contact list? Does it need to be uploaded to the app?
Please advise. I appreciate it very much.

Tip: In Xcode, choose the Help menu at the top of the screen, choose Documentation. Search for "Contacts". Or go to the iPhone Developer site, you can search the forums there, or post the question there if the search doesn't come up with anything.
