Contacts iCloud issue on new MBP

I picked up my 13" MacBook Pro 512gb with Touch Bar last night at my Apple Store in NYC - loving it so far except I've got an issue...

After going thru the initial setup, with no sign of problems, I have iCloud contacts that are "missing." If I go to my contacts app it says I have 200 but when I return to my old Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iCloud.com it shows all 265 contacts. Really annoying - especially in the Messages app because it will just show phone numbers and email addresses.

I've tried signing out of iCloud on the new MBP, toggling Contacts on and off, and no luck. Seems like such an odd issue because I can only duplicate the issue on the new MBP.... all my other devices and computers are fine. What is very strange is that every time I sign out of iCloud and back in - the contacts that were missing are now availableBUT other new contact cards are now gone. I figured I would wait over night just in case it was a server issue or something but still no luck.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you!

Hi,

At the moment, it's just a 'me too'. Didn't have a problem syncing all iCloud data between iPhone, iPad, two Mac Minis and my rMBP late-2012, the Macs on Capitan, the rest on IOS 10.

I setup my 'new' rMBP early-2015 with Sierra and noticed that Contacts were missing (just like you in Messages.app). Did all the usual rain dances like logging out of iCloud on the Mac. Everything ok on iCloud.com, but the Mac kept getting a different subset of the contacts every time.

Didn't have time yet to do extensive AB testing (and I haven't figured out the new logging in Sierra), but your post gives me new impetus.

I'll flatten my old rMBP this weekend anyway, so I'll to runs with Capitan and Sierra to crosscheck.
At the moment it smells like a Sierra issue, not something tied to the hardware of your spanking new touchbar Gizmo.

Solved for me...

I setup my 2012 Mac with Capitan, and this time the contacts wouldn't sync AT ALL. So not a Sierra problem.
Looking at the logs (ah, when it was so easy...), I found "originalLine is a required value" in AddressBookSourceSync messages. Googling turned up http://aggroworld.org/category/oxs/

So I downloaded a .vcf archive from the iCloud website, went into Terminal.app and grep'ed for "X-MS-OL", finding one contact. Deleted him on iCloud.com.

Sync worked on the 2012. And BAM everything was right on the Sierra-2015.

Hope this also gets you on the right track.

How was the logs easier in El Cap than it is in Sierra?

Under Capitan, one could open Console.app and see a conglomerate of messages scroll by. In the filesystem, all logfiles were pure text (as they should be, according to common UNIX religion ;-) that could be easily tailed/grepped/etc.

Under Sierra, Apple changed to "unified logging". I firmly (want to) believe that it will be a good thing in the future. But I have a strong aversion against binary logs and getting them to talk to me is foreign to me (at the moment at least, this will very likely change over the months to come).
