Contacts have been working on and off since release. They were down for quite some time yesterday, same deal.

Even when they are up they don't work properly yet. While you can sync information, pictures added via Apple's Address Book application don't sync.

I've yet to see it work - at all. Trying to reset sync data to force addressbook -> mobileme fails fast. Regular syncs are syncing calendar (in theory, that's sporadic in practice) and bookmarks, but *not* doing address book despite being selected.

I've had to go back to syncing by cable, and worse, reduce to using just one mac, until they resolve this stuff. :-( (mac.com may have been dated, but actually *worked*).

I assume you are trying to load MM with the same source that you are using from iTunes Cable.

Since you have a backup of your Address Book. I would first go into MM and make sure that is working properly. Maybe add 1 contact. This will initialize MM and you will know it is ok. Then stop/start Sync on your iPhon which should clear and load the 1 contact from MM. Then go into MobiileMe Preference (on Windows) and do the above Advanced Reset Sync Data. Assuming that works, then go back into your iPhone and stop/start the Sync and it should load all your contacts back onto the iPhone.

You did not say what the original "fails fast" was.

I'm not sure how to parse that. For the last few years I've had address book, ical, etc all syncing to mac.com. I see you later think I have a PC... nope, this is a mac.

I've tried the game of add one entry on one place, see if it propogates. I've done it on both sides. Changes in me.com don't make it to the mac. Changes on the mac don't make it to me.com. This is with syncing set to automatic, contacts checked. This is with manual syncing, too. And, I can reproduce this on more than one mac. (Until they broke it, I was syncing three macs together).

The only thing I can think of to try next is to wipe everything, pray it works, then reimport a dump of my contacts, which will lose my grouping associations.

BTW, the procedure you describe, I did already. No dice.
