Contemplating going iMac

So I've never owned a mac computer before but after enjoying my iphone 4 and ipad 3g I think I'm jumping ship from windows. I just have a few questions and I'd appreciate any answers I could get.

Will the base model be sufficient for my needs? Mainly going to be web browsing and using it as a media station with iTunes. The only thing I'm not sure of is ripping blu-rays. How long would it take to do a 1080p rip on the base model iMac and would the base model be sufficient enough to play back these rips? I'm currently having issues on my hp laptop even playing back 720p blu-ray rips.
 
The base iMac will easily handle your internet and iTunes needs. As far as playing back 1080p video you should be fine there as well, especially rips at 720p or the like. The problem is going to be doing the actual Blu-ray ripping. Macs don't support Blu-ray so you will not be able to play Blu-ray discs and you will have to buy a third party burner in order to be able to do any form of interaction with Blu-ray media.

Yea i found that out through my research. As long as i get the drive would you have any idea how long it would take to do a 1080p rip on the base model?
 
^^^ Sorry, I don't have any idea about the time frame of ripping a Blu-ray, but the thread I linked to above would be a good place to start. The OP of that thread Cave Man is a great resource for things like that.

Once you get used to Mac OS/X, you will never again be satisfied with Windows. Indeed, you will rue all the days you had spent being in thrall to Microsoft.
 
That's less true than it used to be. Windows 7 was a huge step forward for Windows whereas Snow Leopard was an incremental advance.

I hope Apple has something good in store for the next OS X upgrade. Was really disappointed to have OS X completely ignored at the last ADC.
