controller for simple games

I have never played any games on a computer, so this is very new to me. To play simple games like car racing or pacman, it's very difficult using my keyboard arrows. So what kind of controller should I get? I have a new iMac (OS X 10.6.2) Thanks for your help to my very basic question.

Ok...wow. That is a lot of controller.

Could I just use something like a trackball? Or what items here
