So how do you do this? handbrake says "no valid source found". I assume it's because it's an audio file?

Any tips, magical apps that convert the file? I have an onkyo receiver that decodes everything under the sun and i'd like to listen to my 5.1 audio mixes.

I'm learning a lot from these forums! :)

Thanks

Anybody ever convert a dts 5.1 audio file to play on their apple tv?

You can convert wav to Apple Lossless in iTunes.

Make sure you have all processing (even volume control) turned off in iTunes and Appletv

I've never done this myself, but I was under the impression that you simply play the wav file in iTunes, and then it comes out your digital receiver. As Sfdoddsy notes, you have to turn the volume all the way up in iTunes, turn off any kind of post processing, including the equalizer, so that the input file will be delivered as-is through the optical output of the Airport Express (or in this case Apple TV).

MKVtools can convert from dts to 5.1 DD. http://www.emmgunn.com/mokgvm2dvd/mokgvmhome.html

It has the following features:
Convert a variety of video file formats like mkv, avi, mp4 and ogm to either avi files or mp4 files.
Convert various surround sound audio to 5.1 AAC or 5.1 AC3.
Intuitively select desired video, audio and/or subtitle tracks to process, with the ability to verify the selections using video preview.
Use presets for one step encoding for playback on a variety of hardware
Burn selected subtitle track (i.e., hard subtitles) into the video, though this requires that the video track must be re-encoded.
Control the font, size and positioning of the embedded subtitles.
Split .mkv videos into sections of a specified file size or by start/end time.
Delete tracks from .mkv files.
Join, mux and change the pixel aspect ratio of .mp4 videos.
Extract the selected tracks as individual video, audio and/or subtitle files.
Add jobs to a queue either individually or in batches via drag and drop so you can process multiple files overnight (registered copies only)

Itunes won't play the files - i assume because of the the different sample rates. All that comes out is fuzz. I haven't tried turning processing off though..
I also haven't tried Apple Lossless

The MKVtools is something i was after - will give that a go.

Thanks for all the tips! What a great place.

Both options failed. MKVtools won't convert
Wav won't import into iTunes.

Any other ideas?
