Convert/ back date Quicktime 7.0.3 to Quicktime 6?

I'd really like to find out if it is possible to convert or back date a Quicktime file, version 7.0.3 to previous versions of Quicktime, preferably QT 6. I have some vacation videos and slideshows which I created in iMovie and exported to QT that I'd like friends with older Mac systems and older Windows PC opperating systems that can't update to the lastest QT, to be able to see. Or if QT Pro allows you to do this?

I have an iMac, OSX, version 10.3.9, current version of standard (non-Pro) QT.

Use any QT codec other than H.264.

You may want to try Sorenson 3 basic or MPEG-4.

Unfortunately, MPEG-4 is the file version I'm working with which is unplayable on previous versions of QT being used by friends because they don't have the current version and their operatings sytem won't support the current version. Sorenson 3 sounds like an option, but unless I'm missing something from some websites I checked, there isn't a free version and I'm not really wanting to pay $179 for this ability. I'd rather just go without it. And on the Apple site the H.264 codec is the only one mentioned, so I'm guessing I shouldn't try that one.

I'm still new at navigating the finer points of QT and codecs, so if I've missed something please fill me in. Any other suggestions/thoughts?

You only need QT7 for h.264 encoded stuff. QT6 supports MPEG-4. If they can't run QT6, it just might be time to upgrade.

I agree the easiest solution is to upgrade, however my understanding is that only Windows XP will run QT 7 and Mac users must upgrade to at least 10.3.9 in order to use it as well. While this isn't a problem for me, it is more difficult for those either unwilling or unable to upgrade, which was why I was hoping I could save my version under QT 7 as a previous version, like GT 6.

That may not be possible though, I guess!

Quicktime 7 supports many additional mpeg-4 formats than QuickTime 6. However, if you make your videos in Sorensor Video, it will work on QT 6. Or, you can convert your movies to DivX or 3ivX which will play into any system which supports these 2 codecs.

Last but not least, if these problems you are having persist, tell your friends to download VLC which supports almost every known video format (apart from version 3 of the WMV codec which will be supported soon I think).
