iPod Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC - HELP

I have this new feature selected when syncing my music to my iPhone 3GS 16GB. It allows me to have an extra 600+ songs on my iPhone, which is great... but theres one huge problem I'm having.

Before I had this feature selected, iTunes would always leave about 300MB of free space on my iPhone, leaving space to take pics, vids, and download apps and songs over 3G or Wifi. With the "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC" option selected, iTunes leaves less than 5MB of free space on my iPhone, making it almost impossible to add anything new to the iPhone.

Is anybody else having this problem? Is there a fix for this?

I have 50+ GB of music on my computer, and I like the simplicity of letting iTunes automatically select the albums to go on my iPhone. It saves me the trouble and time of having to do it myself.

Allow me to clarify my problem:
iTunes used to automatically choose the music that went on my iPhone, leaving about 300MB of free space for me to do stuff. With "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC" is selected, iTunes pretty much fills my iPhone to the point where there's no free space left to do anything.

It appears iTunes is trying to fill all the available space when you select the option to let iTunes do the choosing. The other poster is right. Manually choose what you want to sync, rather than letting iTunes do it.

When you click the Autofill button, iTunes will automatically sync as much music as possible

Alright, this is definitely a round about method BUT:

Figure out how much space on your phone you want dedicated to music. 1 GB of 128kbps music is 18 hours of music. So now make a smart playlist, have the only match rule set to "Playlist" "is" "Music". Then change the "Limit to" 'hours', and put in the value of 18*(how much music you want).

Then select that new playlist as your sync'd playlist.

Like I said round-about, but hey, it works

Another work-around might be to transfer 300MB of large photos or other files to the iPhone, then let iTunes sync to fill the rest of the space, then delete the 300MB of files you initially transferred.
