So I tried Calibre on a whole bunch of ebooks and the results weren't that great.

Has that been other people's experience?

I have Good Reader but if I can get good results with Calibre I'd like to keep my ebooks in iBooks.

I rarely say never, but you will never be able to perfectly convert a PDF into an epub. If you are satisfied with a few quirks here and there via the conversion, it definitely can be done.

Calibre works fine for me - or at least I thought that it did. What is going wrong with your efforts?

Chris

I'm curious to know also because like Chris, I also have good results with Calibre. All my epubs were converted with Calibre.

Actually I had a bit of go at this last night and had some fun with some pdfs and adding pictures as front covers (thanks mainly to Amazon).

I think that they look pretty good and most of the pages look good.

For me, Calibre mutilated the table of contents so bad that after the first 10 chapters or so it would make an entry called Index 1 or something like that for every three pages of text. So in a normal technical ebook which is 1200+ pages or so, you literally have hundreds of TOC entries called Index 1 that when clicked brings you to a random spot in the e-book.

I gave up and went to Goodreader. Couldn't be happier.

I'ts also going to depend on how good the PDF's meta data is. If you scan yourself then the OCR is not going to be very accurate which mens the conversion will be inaccurate too.

I had been using Calibre to convert books, and had about 20 converted and working fine. I just upgraded to a newer version, though, and I'm having serious issues. Every book I've converted since upgrading comes out like the picture attached.

I've tried using the default output profile, the iPad profile, everything. Nothing comes out right. I even downgraded to an earlier version of calibre, and it still ruins the epubs I want to convert.

Anyone have any suggestions?
