this is probably a really stupid question..
everytime i convert somethign from illustrator to pdf i have to place it into inDesign and then export.. can you create a pdf straight from illustrator?

Yes. Go to File > Save As... and you can select Illustrator PDF from the file type dropdown.
 
You can even save it so that the .PDF is editable in Illustrator.

Though be aware that this adds significantly to the file size, so if you're trying to bring down the size of the file for emailing, etc, sometimes it's better turn off "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities", which is on by default.
