Converting avi files to ipad friendly format, just getting errors

While i normally buy all my digital media on itunes, i have some movies that are in avis

Now i used handbrake, just regular mode, and mp4, h264, and set a max size to 500mb, now, when i try to import this file into the ipad, i get errors

what the fudge?

Try using one of the apple presets in handbrake. Universal or the one for iPod Touch & iPhone should work. You could also try and convert using quicktime player.

What's the size of the movie? 640x480, etc?

I would just use the iPhone preset or the AppleTV/iPad preset to ensure proper settings and try that first, then tweak if needed.
