iPod Converting AVI's to iPod friendly format?

I have a bunch of AVI Movie and TV shows I have ripped from DVD. Now I am planning on getting an iPod.

How would I go about converting them to be compatible with the iPod?

I used MacTheRipper and Handbrake the first time round. Handbrake is not AVI's files as far as I can tell.

Any help is always appreciated.

iSquint or VisualHub (same programmer(s)). I use these to sometimes successfully convert avi to mp4 (ipod).
